Transgender Care Q & A

What is different about transgender care?

Transgender people have gender identities that are different than the biological sexes they were assigned at birth. Transgender people may identify themselves as male, female, or nonbinary, but no matter which gender you identify with, your health care needs are unique.

Reproductive health care services, like pelvic exams and Pap smears, are important for people who have female reproductive organs. However, if you don’t identify as female, you may be reluctant to seek out gynecologic care.

For transgender people, reproductive health care can cause emotional difficulty because their reproductive organs don’t match their gender expression. Additionally, transgender people may need medical support to transition, such as hormone therapy and gender reassignment surgery.

Choosing a MIG transgender care provider means that your doctor is experienced in working with transgender patients. They have training in the unique health needs of the transgender community, and they provide compassionate, sensitive care to patients.

What does transgender care include?

Transgender care is a comprehensive service, offering for people of all genders. Your MIG provider tailors your care based on your gender identity and your reproductive organs, whether you identify as male, female, or nonbinary.

Transgender care can include:

  • Fertility services

  • Hormone therapy

  • Reproductive health care

  • Sexually transmitted disease (STD) care

If you have female reproductive organs, preventive care is an important part of your health care plan. Your provider may recommend Pap smears, as well as screenings and treatment for common gynecologic health issues like endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and uterine fibroids.

If gender reassignment surgery is part of your plan, your MIG provider can provide referrals for surgical services, too.

What can I expect with transgender care?

Every person is unique, and their health care plan should be, too. When you see a MIG provider for transgender care, they take the time to understand your health, your needs, and your goals.

They provide essential health screenings depending on your reproductive organs. If you are transitioning or planning to transition, they provide hormone therapy and recommendations for gender reassignment surgery.

If you want to have children in the future, your provider reviews your fertility options. Many people can preserve their ability to have children, whether it’s through freezing eggs or undergoing fertility treatment like in vitro fertilization.

Your MIG provider also helps you with documentation to change your gender marker and/or name.
